Out with the Leica M8

Out with the Leica M8

Is hell really such a bad place?

First impressions: it feels like my M6. The body is a little bit thicker and the shutter sounds odd at first when listening indoors. Out shooting, none of it matters.

During my lunch walk I used it with all my three lenses: 25 Biogon, 35 ‘cron and 50 Planar. The 35 and 25 are great, the 50 seems a little too restrictive, although it may make a nice portrait lens. The real shame is that the 25mm brings up the 28mm frame lines, not the 24mm lines. That way one cannot accurately frame with it. The angle of view seems really nice with the 25mm Zeiss Biogon.

Camera controls i.e. buttons for the digital side take some getting used to. For example there is no centre button in the rotating wheel, unlike the EOS Kiss Digital which has the ‘set’ button in there. ISO is not displayed, but is just as accessible as with the Kiss, i.e. menu that comes up when pressing set button. For shooting, the camera handles exactly like the M6. No delays. Shutter dial has middle increments, which is unusual. I did not dare to turn off the review just yet, so some chimping ensued. I had been warned about weak white balance so I was paranoid setting it manually all the time (today is a cloudy day, but some sunny intervals, so I was toggling back and forth).

So far I have only seen the photos on the camera back so I am not sure about image quality or what I shot so let’s see how I will do trying to open the files back home. Format was DNG+JPG, I got around 60 shots onto a 1GB card that way. I will post images as soon as I have something presentable.

Note: Before you think I have won the lottery, this was a lunch break loaner from a colleague at work
