Kazuo Kitai retreated both physically and spiritually after documenting the student demonstrations and uprisings of the late 60s and the battle against Narita Airport. In Tohjiba we find him in rural Tohoku at different points in the 70s, but mainly in 1973 and 1975.
As he traveled äóî the photos collected here are mainly from Akita Prefecture but also feature Aomori, Yamagata, Iwate, and Fukushima Prefectures as well äóî Kitai would stay in simple lodgings called tojhiba that included a natural hot springs bath.
These "desolate tohjibaäó_were my favorite lodgings while on my travels," writes Kitai in a short postscript.
