"Itasha" literally means "painful car", and it is the name given to the relatively new otaku hobby of decorating one's car with images drawn from Japanese anime and manga primarily. We're not talking here about affixing a tiny bumper sticker to your fender, but rather decorating the car so completely that the car can not realistically be referred to as a "Toyota" or "Nissan" car anymore.
In Sakaguchi's look at this phenomenon, he photographs the cars of course, but almost always with the "creator" posing either alongside or in the driver's seat. Each photo is also accompanied by bilingual Japanese/English captions about the different hobbyists and their motivations or thoughts on the hobby.
