In 2007, the town of Yubari in Hokkaido made national headlines when it declared bankruptcy after its plans to turn its coal mining based economy into a tourism-based one failed miserably. This same year photographer and publisher Shinichi Ito traveled to Yubari on an assignment for a magazine. Although only there for a few days, Ito manages to capture the once-thriving town as it struggles to survive.
