In 2001, just after her mother passed away, Ishiuchi turned her attention to some work she had shot 20 years earlier. As she writes in the afterword (available in Japanese and English), Ishiuchi only printed up those negatives that she had never printed before. "The shapes on the negatives from 20 years ago acquire their form upon the printing paper with a clarity as if they were taken just yesterday. In the darkroom, time's access tilts just a little, and as the odors of all these years dissolve and are set free into the solution, I suddenly become a traveler suspended in the town of endless night."
