Tatsuya Shimohira's Matsuri
represents No. 11 in an ongoing series of monographs Zen Foto has published on the occasion of their gallery exhibitions. Shimohira, a member of local Tokyo gallery collective Totem Pole, has been photographing festivals (in Japanese, "matsuri") in the Tokyo metropolitan area over the last five years. Through Shimohira's photographs we can realize that the festival tradition remains strong still now, even in non-rural parts of Japan. We also realize that Shimohira can be considered not merely as a photographer of festivals following in such well-respected footsteps as Hiromi Tsuchida, Masatoshi Naito, and Issei Suda, but at 30 already a photographer of great promise with his own unique and steady vision
Softcover, 18cm x 25cm, 36 pages, 30 photos. Print run of 500 copies. Afterword by Shimohira and Zen Foto director Mark Pearson available in English, Japanese, and Chinese.
