Nobuyoshi Araki

With over 400 photo books to his name, Nobuyoshi Araki (b. 1940) remains by far the most prolific Japanese photographer, and unarguably the best well-known one outside of Japan. Araki's larger than life personality, his unbridled enthusiasm for all things photography, and his incessant documentation of his life, warts and all, have combined to produce not only a massively dense oeuvre, but an incredibly rich and varied one. To get a sense of this richness, you may want to pick up Ararchy Photobook Mania, which is an illustrated bibliography of all 454 Araki books printed up to the time of its 2012 publication, or dive right in one of his best-known works, the still-in-print Sentimental Journey, Winter Journey.
