Daido Moriyama

Daido Moriyama Self-Portrait in Mirror

Beginning with his 1999 exhibition organized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Daido Moriyama (b. 1938) has steadily gained both popularity and critical acclaim in the West, and in recent years has had large exhibitions in Paris, New York, and London. While Moriyama's work is perhaps best known for its embrace of an are, bure, bokeh aesthetic, he can also be credited in large part for the idea that the photo book is a work of art in and of itself, rather than merely a collection of reproductions. If you're looking for a singular introduction to Moriyama, either (or both) of his "magazine work" collections — Nippon Gekijou 1965-1970 and Nanika e no tabi, 1971-1974 would be good places to start.
