Maybe I'm the only person here not to have discovered the list http://5b4.blogspot.com/2009/12/best-books-of-2009.html till today. Nothing whatever there either that's Japanese, aside from one book titled Not Niigata.

Odd: as I look through the page full of Photo-Eye's chums' selection, most don't even have covers that tempt me to click on their links.

I thought I might see Jacob Aue Sobol's "I, Tokyo" on one list or other. Me, I can't see what the fuss is about, but clearly many others do.

I'm glad to see "Citizens" at the top of this list here.

Another honorable mention for Nagano in 2009: "Magazine Work 60s" / マガジン・ワーク60年代.

I'm seldom interested in Ninagawa's work but I enjoyed her "Umezz House".

Not a single Japanese book is mentioned in http://www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/2009/dec/28/photography-books-2009 but it's worth a read all the same.

Speaking of Honma, reminded me of his Trails, calendar-like book for 09. We all seem to be broke...that one was cool and gloomy at a resonable price. Glad I paid the 1600yen.

Print quality aside, Faraway Eyes is pretty amazing. It's a shame it couldn't have been of slightly better construction given the pictures inside.

Aya Fujioka's I Don't Sleep was worth the cover price and while I couldn't afford them, two other Araki books from 2009- the Rathole published Polaroid book and his Taka Ishii 「69猥景」were also beautifully done.
