You had chosen an interesting article to write. Especially today many people prefer to buy digital camera instead buy the film one. The digital camera it much convenience to use. Your article have touch me, because you have brought my memory back. When few years ago, I used to own the canon film camera that I always love to taken picture. After gotten the picture developed enjoy looking at them, because the picture always turn to be so pretty. It’s very sad to heard that the film camera business its not doing so well.

Love the place. I am there nearly everyday, and if there is something that I really want, I know I can rely on Hero-san to source it for me.
Sankyo and Nikon House are my Mecca.

I've never understood how these used camera stores in Ginza make enough money. They always seem to boast more staff than customers, and they are sitting on prime real estate, which means many are paying exorbitant rents. It's probably online auctions, and not the above "digital fire," that is sounding their death knell.

I lived in Japan from 2004 to 2008, and used to go frequently to Ohba camera. I bought there my first rangefinder lens (35mm F2.5 Color Skopa Voigtlander) and many many things of my actual equipment. I remember almost everyday in Shimbashi station when pass to this store on my way to home from the school and work. In the middle of 2008 Ohba store closed and I was very sad to see that, now a Standing Sushi bar is there. Another photography historic place pass away in Tokyo. Since that moment I have waited for the weekends to go for the Shinjuku camera shops that year by year are disappearing by the digital fire until I was in Japan.

Dirk,

Thanks! You're right about going to his shop. Any prospect would want to see and inspect a camera and/or lens and sending e-mails is a waste of time. I'll be sure to mention Japan Exposure to him.

John, your best bet is to walk right into the shop (see map link in the article). If you contact him, like every dealer he'd say "I need to see it, just bring it along" so there is little value sending an email. Make sure to mention Japan Exposures when meeting him!

Barry,

A great article - very informative. I'll be going to Japan soon and was going to take along my Nikon F2AS camera and 55mm f/1.2 ai'd lens - in pristine condition - to perhaps sell. Do you have a contact e-mail for Mr. Akizawa? I would like to contact him to see if he would be interested. Thanks for your reply.

Best regards,

John

John,
Thanks for the nice comments! I'm glad you enjoyed my essay and that it brought back good memories for you. I'll bet if you went back to that camera store in Osaka someday, that proprietor would still be there, and he would remember you! It is amazing at how many of these Mom and Pop camera stores are still in business here in Japan, I hope that all the loyal film users and camera collectors continue to keep them in business so future generations of foreigners like us can enjoy stopping by there and getting great deals.
By the way, the next article I'm working on for Japan Exposures will be on the Nikon legacy in Japan, so stay tuned!

Barry, great article! It brought back memories of my own time in Japan, and a favorite camera store on a train stop in Osaka...where the proprietor was much like Hero-san (but without English!). I bought my first Nikon and lenses there in 1975 and have been in love with them ever since. Great article! Write more!
